I was a senior when M won the national championship in '89. Lived on Hill Street and ran wild in the streets and partied like an animal after Glen Rice secured the final errant shot in his hands as the buzzer sounded. Supported the movement to get Bo to hire Fish as the permanent head coach going forward. Enjoyed the meteoric rise of M basketball through the Fab Five and suffered through the humiliation of Explorer-gate and everything that followed.
It's a complicated thing, to know that the man who brought your school a legitimate championship also cost your school many years worth of wins and the upper hand over your main in-state rival through his willful courting of a dangerous booster. Though he was at least indirectly, and most likely directly, complicit in UM's ultimate demise in the '90s, I will always appreciate Coach Fisher. When I see what he's done with SDSU over the years, I'm impressed and happy for him.
I hope they beat Duke on Sunday.
