We lost the game on turnovers
We were a net -5 in turnover margin and that cost this team 20 points in opportunity costs for us and MSU (see analysis below). MSU scored 1TD directly off of Isaacs fumble, but we also have a cost to our offense because we stopped a drive where we might have scored.
Conclusion: In a game we lost by 4 points, we left 20 points on the field with our -5 turnovers. If we were net zero or net positive on turnovers I am very confident we would have won. Ball security is taught and drilled into every player, offense and defense starting in pee wee league. If they did not get the message its on the coaching staff. With -5 turnovers they obviously did not get the message.
Cost of a Turnover
According to Football Outsiders the average cost of a fumble or interception is always 4 points. The cost of a turnover is not simply the points that MSU scored off the turnover, it is also the points we did not score because we did not keep the ball. Those two pieces added together always equals 4 points: http://www.footballoutsiders.com/stat-analysis/2003/how-many-points-turnover-worth
Jump Ball for 4 points?
Think about this. When Mr. O'Korn is chucking the ball up for grabs he is giving the opponents the opportunity to grab 4 points right out of the air on a jump ball.
Game Line: Fumbles & Interceptions
6:21 1st Qtr - Ty Isaac Fumbled on Michigan 38yd line – Cost: 4 points
MSU scored directly off of this fumble = 6 points
1:13 2nd Qtr – Sean McKeon Fumbled on Michigan 35 – Cost: 4 Points
4:38 3rd Qtr – John O’Korn Intercepted Returned to Michigan St. 43 – Cost: 4 points
15:00 4th Qtr – John O’Korn Intercepted Returned to Michigan 41 – Cost 4 points
12:08 4th Qtr – John O’Korn Intercepted Returned to Michigan 42 – Cost 4 points
Total theoretical cost of UM's turnovers = 20 points
