Jack Miller, Michigan's starting center last season, will forego his fifth year of eleigibility
Miller's decision was first reported Thursday by Sam Webb of Ann Arbor's WTKA and GoBlueWolverine.com.
"Jack has decided to forego his final year of eligibility to focus on studies and pursue business opportunities," according to Michigan associate athletic director Dave Ablauf.
At last December's football banquet, Miller was given the Hugh Rader Jr. Memorial Award for the team's top offensive lineman.
Miller is a political science major and last fall in an interview with The Detroit News said he is interested in possibly pursuing an MBA and even public office. He is a news junkie and keeps up with events in the country and around the world.
He also kept up with coverage of the Wolverines and admitted some of the criticism of the team and, particularly, the offensive line, stung a bit. Miller was unofficially considered the team spokesman and almost always met with the media for post-game interviews and during game weeks.
In the interview with The News, Miller said it had been tough on the players since Michigan went 11-2 in 2011 to listen to the criticism and deal with the losing that followed.
"You don't know until you experience this how tough this is, physically, mentally, emotionally, what playing at this level demands," Miller said. "As hard as we work, it's disappointing when you invest as much as we do. But I wouldn't trade this for anyplace in the world. If you told me I could go wherever and win titles, I wouldn't trade it.
"On the surface, that would be hard to believe, for a normal 21-year-old that might be hard to believe, but I see the bigger picture. It's more than wins and losses. It's about this degree and this brotherhood that I'll be part of forever. Michigan is going to be fine. We're in a rough patch right now, and it's more than wins and losses. The other things this encapsulates are much greater than what a lot of programs could offer
