Last year the D-Line took major hits due to attrition. This year it looks like the defensive backfield is. To paint a better picture of the need at DB for MSU I thought I would write it out- 1 FS & 1 WR/CB will probably be expelled due to criminal allegations (DV & DC-FOY), 1 SS/FS is leaving for Juco (Kenny Lyke), 1 CB is leaving for JUCO (Kaleel Gaines), 1 starting CB graduated (Darian Hicks), 1 FS suffered a broken hip last year and it is not known what his future is (Jalen Watts-Jackson), 1 CB had a stroke & has been out since the end of the season (Tyson Smith), 1 CB has suffered a broken neck and is a long way from being game shape (Vayante Copeland), 1 starting SS left early for the NFL (Montae Nicholson) & 1 starting FS graduated (Demetrius Cox), 1 CB has tried 4 different positions and just quit the team (Drake Martinez), and now it is likely that a true sophomore WR/CB will start at one CB (Justin Layne), a true freshman will start at the other CB -IMO (Josiah Scott), a walk-on will be a 2nd stringer- (Corey Pryor), even using a converted OLB to CB (TJ Harrell).
There are other safeties & cornerbacks that have contributed in special teams and back up roles that may start this year like Dowell, Morrisey, Miller, Andrews, Butler, & Willis too.
