So, John Beilein seems to be bringing in a "glut" of big men and forwards and the bloggers seem to perceive a gap in the guard position down the road. They may be correct, however, maybe Beilein sees potential in players to play alternative positions that we do not.
Just a wild thought, but is it possible that Beilein and staff believe that some of those young forwards could actually project to play guard (ala Levert or even Irvin late in the year)? By the end of the season, Irvin displayed 2 guard skills and I see him getting time there. Frankly, Irvin may leave for the NBA prior to the 2016 season but that is an argument for another time.
The two taller players that I wonder about as possible projected guards are Chatman and Wilson. Chatman already has very solid ball handling skills and seemed to be able to penetrate off the dribble last season. Could he be projected to play a guard position by our coaches? Early in the season last year, before Wilson was injured, he displayed amazingly good ball handling skills, including a "killer" cross over dribble and drive to the hoop. Also, Wilson's HS coach commented when DJ committed that he could see him playing any of the 5 positions at UM (including PG!) given his dribbling and passing skills. Could a 6-9 Wilson actually be projected to play guard down the road?
If either, or both, of these "forwards" with ball skills were to be projected as guards, the perceived glut of bigs and shortage of guards may not be the issue that so many believe. Adding Wagner plus Davis plus a future Teske could make more sense.
