So the news and freep run Greenstein's article but not

Finebaum's comments. Interesting.

Greenstein is a print journalist.

Finebaum is not a print journalist.

The Detroit News is a print medium.

I think it's that simple.

Besides, the News still employs Angelique. As long as she's alive, Michigan will have an advocate in the local print media.

At the end of the day...UM and it's coaches should just not take 'commitments' from kids they may tell to take a hike.

Just because a kid plays the game doesn't mean the University has to do the same thing. I would love to hear from coach Harbaugh on this issue. I will say this...if the coaching staff tells a kid we will take your 'commitment' but will re-evaluate and not accept your commitment because of injury or a better option opens up then I guess I would be fine with that...but again it's not really a commitment on either end.

As MichNittlion said...it's long past due for an early signing period so coaching staffs can't play this game and the kids can't back off. It's the wild wild west of recruiting with no ethics involved.

I really don't understand the idea that a school should have to give a scholarship to an injured player like Matt Falcon. Scholarships are a zero-sum game. If somebody gets injured, it opens a spot for some other athlete. Why should they not have a shot? Can you imagine if NFL rosters worked like that? A player gets injured, but you still have to keep him on the roster and just make do with fewer players? HAAAAAA!!!

For every kid who loses an opportunity, there's another one who gains an opportunity. Michigan was extremely generous to offer Falcon a free education without having to play football. Truthfully, for his future, that was the best option. You get a great education and you don't get crippled (or worse) for life.

Yet Michigan will still get criticized. Best just to ignore the BS.

Greenstein is getting skewered on twitter for that one-sided hack job. Serves him right! Write a National Enquirer quality article without knowing the facts or getting both sides? Too effing bad, Flamer!

I do believe Teddy is getting some well deserved 'abuse' because he clearly went all nuclear on Harbaugh rather than presenting both sides for a major news story.

That being said...my point still stands and what most UM fans are trying to wash away...that Swenson made a commitment to UM and Harbaugh and staff didn't immediately rescind that offer/commitment.

My understanding of a 'commitment' in the recruiting world is that a University accepts the 'commitment' which was initially an offer and says welcome aboard young man/woman. We will accept your verbal declaration and will wait for you to sign a LOI when you can.

Because kids can withdraw the commitment doesn't mean a University/program should do the same thing. They should make crystal clear whether this is conditional on x,y,z and if kid starts slacking then maybe the University should wait to accept commitments until they are absolutely sure or toward the the final weeks before the National Signing Day.

Coaches for UM were playing his commitment as some form of insurance until they knew exactly what they could get/wanted. That was wrong. I expect more from a program.

Sorry for the honest assessment.

Actually, in this culture of "agreement" in which we live, colleges and players are committing together and I think it necessitates holding loosely to the commitment for both when either could back out. Players do this all the time, so I don't stress when schools go backwards. Once it's signed, that's another matter and there are clear rules for proceeding. The students will be fine, almost always, if they don't get to the final, written agreement and the same with the college. Erik Swenson is disappointed, he's not a victim and will likely find his way to a fine education and football future.

Swenson commited 2+ years ago to a previous coach (BRADY HOKE) who was part of perhaps the worst era of Michigan Football ever. Jim Harbaugh was hired last January & has been head coach at UM for 13 months. Harbaugh requested Swenson come to UM camp for evaluation this past summer. Swenson refused. Harbaugh then requested the kid come for an official visit. Again Swenson refused. So Harbaugh & staff said they would then evaluate him on his Senior season film. Swenson loafed & was unimpressive in his Senior season by many accounts & was then deemed to be not worthy of a commitable UM offer by the new coach who now runs the program, JIM HARBAUGH! So Harbaugh & staff told Swenson weeks ago that his "offer' was no longer commitable & suggested that Swenson look around & take visits elsewhere, where he may have a chance to actually see the field someday. Swenson ignored the advice & UM 's recommendations & eventually his offer was pulled. End of story. The street goes both ways in this ridiculous recruiting game. It's essentially a game inside the game. What don't you get? Would you have expected James Franklin to honor every single one of the 120 'offers' that Bill O'Brien sent out before he split? Really? Why do you care so much about UM recruiting anyway? Is Erik Swenson your nephew or something? Get the facts. Look at both sides. One side can say whatever they want while the other side cannot say a word without some serious violations. Get a clue & move along!

I read the Tribune, and Greenstein seems to like getting shots in at UM when he can. Not sure what his deal is, but this is in no way surprising.
