Had dinner with my brother and his family yesterday. We both know a kid who played at BC under Brown. Interestingly, the young man was pretty ambivalent about playing CFB -- viewed it as a way to pay for his education and a lot of work but not much fun.
My brother knows the young man's mother. When they were chatting about her son's experience there, she reiterated that the young man hadn't romanticized playing college football and, but for the tuition $$, probably would not have played.
My brother then asked her about Don Brown. "My son LOVED coach Brown. We are BIG coach Brown fans in our family."
I found it interesting that here's a family that's highly educated and views CFB with some skepticism -- and is willing to say so -- but they gave Brown an unqualified endorsement. I think that speaks volumes to his enthusiasm and genuine nature.
