For the most part people posting here assert that the remaining unresolved NCAA allegations against Michigan won’t result in any serious penalties. But I don’t quite understand your confidence.
All the allegations against Michigan other than those having to do with sign-stealing have been adjudicated with no serious damage to the football program. But that leaves all the allegations regarding sign-stealing or advanced scouting awaiting a ruling by the Committee On Infractions.
If the articles I’ve read are accurate, there are 11 unresolved allegations, including 6 that are Level 1, the most serious. Among them are charges against Sherrone Moore and the University itself, including those for being repeat offenders and failing to properly monitor the football program.
Any of these allegations would be serious enough, but collectively the potential penalties are scary, to me anyway. They might include suspension of coaches, meaningful limitations of recruiting and scholarships, or vacating wins in multiple seasons, even the Big Ten and national championships.
I’m not suggesting that any of these penalties will be assessed, but the COI could assess them, completely consistent with the NCAA Bylaws.
I’d really like to join all of you who believe these allegations won’t amount to anything meaningful. But I haven’t discovered the information that suggests that I can share that confidence.
Please, someone explain why I shouldn’t worry about the upcoming COI hearing and how serious their penalties could be? I don’t want to be a Debby Downer. I would like to share your confidence. Please tell me what I’m missing.
