Shea Patterson, Junior, Michigan
Reasons to leave: There aren’t many, unless Patterson is simply tired of the college scene. There are rumors that several NFL openings would be enticing for Jim Harbaugh and that type of change with the coaching staff could cause Patterson to leave.
Reasons to stay: At some point, Patterson needs to take the next step in his development in order to be taken seriously by NFL scouts. Yes, he showed progress throughout this season, but Patterson unraveled vs. the Buckeyes and left production on the field. Right now, his football potential is more unrealized than impending.
NFL Scout: “I’ll admit, I figured he’d be one and done the moment I heard he was headed up to Ann Arbor. But he’s still making freshman mistakes. Another year with Jimmy (Harbaugh) will be good for him.
Dwayne Haskins, Redshirt Sophomore, Ohio State
Reasons to leave: Haskins is about to finish one of the greatest seasons in Big Ten history, already setting the conference single-season records for passing yards and touchdown passes. The Ohio State offense continues to evolve during the Urban Meyer era, but it isn’t an offensive system known for producing NFL-level quarterbacks. Would another season substantially prepare Haskins for the NFL? If junior WR KJ Hill declares early for the draft, Haskins would lose his top-four pass-catchers for next season. While Haskins’ choice shouldn’t be influenced by other decisions, if Herbert returns to Oregon, the Buckeye passer becomes the new favorite for the QB1 spot.
Reasons to stay: Experience. Haskins has started only a dozen games up to this point with the potential for 15 total starts if Ohio State advances to the National Title Game. Since 1973, there have been 100 quarterbacks drafted in the first round and only three of them started 15 games or fewer in college (Mark Sanchez, Cam Newton, Mitchell Trubisky). Haskins has shown steady improvement vs. pressure throughout this season, but added reps would be beneficial before he becomes a professional.
NFL Scout: “I’ll tell yah, the ones who jump after one good year scare me. Teams are going to blitz the shit out of him, can he adjust and make reads on the fly? They’ll make Purdue look like a day on the beach. He’s pretty raw, but most of these guys are. I’m told he’s a coachable kid and the arm talent is elite so I’m sure a lot of teams will be comfortable with him. I bet he comes out.”
