Rich Rod Desperate Again-Fires DC Casteel

Long time DC. When will RR learn that he is just an OC?
Wow, I thought Casteel was the only DC in the world RR could work with. The RR apologists assured us that was the only reason for the train wreck at UM, not having his chosen DC. And LC not giving him a hug when he got to A2.
It doesn't get fixed overnight...

He will be gone at Zona in 2-3 more years by being fired. He is an OC and not a head coach.

Did South Carolina actually offer RichRod this past December? ........ or was that just RichRod/Arizona setting some trees on fire and say "look at this, look at this smoke!"

I sort of suspect the latter.

That was the rumor but I don't believe it. South Carolina's hiring of Will Muschamp is the worst hire of this new season. If you can't win at Florida then how in the hell will you win at SC? Which is a backwater of college football. Only Lou Holtz and Steve Spurrier were able to have moderate success there. The Muschamp hire is a good ole boy hire and South Carolina will win 5-6 games in a good year. The AD RayTanner is an idiot for that hire but who would really want to be at SC? Clemson will now sweep the top talent in the state for many years. These coaches at this level are paid millions to win and when they lose, they make every excuse in the book for not being able to win. Look at Harbaugh this year! Meyer, Dantonio, Saban, Shaw. They win. Muschamp is a DC and nothing more. He has already made some real shitty assistant hires. Rich Rod knows better than to come to SC. He would not take a job in that shit hole they call Columbia

Funny. Well done.

I think RR will be at UA for awhile but as most UA fans probably already realize...UA will score 45 pts and give up about 45 points and they will finish about 7-5 on average.

It's a great fit for UA. They are a basketball school and they play in a more finesse conference. RR should stay away from any conference like the SEC or Big Ten where they can overpower you.

Here is the bottom line with RR. He is a very impressive tier 2 coach. Hoke is an unimpressive tier 2 coach. RR is good at what he does which is playing at a lower tier football school and playing in a state/region where he can get more speed and he can survive.

You have to be delusional to think RR is anything other than a systems coach or run spread OC. RR is better than Hoke but that isn't saying much.

Count me as guilty to thinking if RR had Casteel in the fold in A2 that the team could have been dangerous (stupid me).

Tell me this SCfan. Why is it so hopeless in Columbia, yet Clemson has achieved recent success & past success? Really thought the Gamecocks had turned the corner when they were on a run of strong QB play. Connor Shaw, Stephen Garcia, Dylan Thompson come to mind.

If Rich had been given another year we may have won a National Championship that year.

Of course we would have, Rod and Greg Robinson's swiss cheese defensive scheme would have beaten Alabama or any of the top teams that year. RR is not far off from being a high school coach and neither was his joke of a staff including Tony Gibson. RR may of not had support in places but HE and HE ALONE caused his demise at Michigan. He is one of the great all time FRAUDS like Charlie Weiss of the game of football. Rich Fraudriguez. He needs to go back to Glenville State where he can win consistently.

Sorry SCfan but your arguement is more emotional then factual. Rich Rod can coach, there is no question there - he has helped Arizona at least be somewhat relevant. Now, is he an elite coach? No, but he is probably better then 50% of the coaches in college right now and maybe even more. RR started the whole spread mania and back when he was at WV nobody could stop it or knew what the heck it was all about so he enjoyed his success. Now, everyone has the spread offense and unfortunately Rich Rod is too stubborn to evolve his coaching style. I still think a Top 15 school looking would take him if he was available today because of his WV pedigree. Now, you not liking him or hating him might be a different story but the man is not a fraud. You love to sing praises of Hoke who I think is a way worse coach then RR but you call RR a fraud...they are both nice guys, good people that care about their teams. Their tenures did not work out at Michigan - and mind you, Michigan is probably the toughest place to be a HC in the country - an intelligent fan base that expects nothing but perfection. It's not a job for everyone - remember how everyone thought Carr was terrible when we went 8-4 back to back and then won a NC? Michigan fans are incredibly unforgiving, period and that is ok and that is why JH is perfect for us - because he is thick skinned and has earned his stripes

There is much more to being a head coach than knowing X's and O's. It is true that he created the spread option but so what? Everyone knows how to defend it now just like the split back veer which was created in Houston in the 1960's. He is nothing more than an OC period. He has NEVER recognized that football involves three phases of the game which involves O,D, and special teams. Arizona was better during their "Desert Swarm" years than they will ever be under Rich Rod. Yes, Michigan is a tough place to coach but can you just imagine what would happen to him had he been hired at Alabama? He came into Michigan cocky, stubborn, and REFUSED to adapt to his players while installing his system. Also, when in the hell have I praised Hoke on here? NEVER. I don't like RR because I have taken players to WV on recruiting trips and have met him. Have you ever met him? I doubt it? he pulls a wagon of bullshit behind him 10 miles long and make no mistake about it, everything is ALL about him and him alone!!!!. I was appalled when he was hired at UM to succeed Carr and remember sitting in the Gator Bowl, shaking my head, when Mississippi State demolished the high school product they were playing that day that was once known as Michigan. RR is not in the same league as Myer, Harbaugh, Kelly, Shaw, Saban, Fisher, Miles and the list goes on. Yes, he can probably discuss football with them and they have probably consulted him about the spread option but the proof is in the pudding and he ALWAYS blames others before taking responsibility for his own failures. David Brandon was a turd as an AD and he did damage at Michigan and especially by hiring Hoke, however, he got it right when he fired Rich Rodriguez as the head coach. That much I will say is 100% correct about Brandon's time at UM.

South Carolina has never been as successful in football as Clemson. Comparing those two in football is like comparing Central Michigan to Michigan. Even before this year, Clemson has always been good and usually goes 9-3 or 8-4 in a bad year. SC has been really good maybe 2 years under Spurrier. If Dabo Swinney ever went 3-8 at Clemson he would be fired immedIately.

I agree that RR is an excuse maker and a finger pointer. His classic "It doesn't get fixed overnight" excuse came in I believe Year 3. How many recruiting classes does it take to get fixed, 7 or 8?
The idea that he was doomed at UM because he wasn't "accepted" also seems lame. Maybe win some games, don't have the worst 3 defenses in program history and you will be accepted.

Great post Tarun. Maybe your best one ever!

I don't think because a head coach is offensively minded necessarily makes him just an OC no more than Bill B who is a defensive genius.

The problem with RR is he is a mediocre recruiter, a mediocre hiring manager, a mediocre coach in overseeing his entire operation. RR is a mediocre head coach who happens to have a offensive system that did very well at WVU...probably because of two exceptionally talented skill players at qb/rb. He hit the jackpot.

UM made a mistake. It happens. It has happened everywhere to everyone. Now Hoke isn't a mediocre coach but more of a good recruiter. He doesn't really offer anything on the field. Is he a d coordinator? No. I guess he can recruit and coach the DL. If he was a D coordinator and good hire good coaches consistently and manage the program/recruit then I would say he was a mediocre/average coach...but he can't. He is too one dimensional which is why I say Hoke is a poor coach.

Big differences between the two guys. Both are frauds on some level. Both somehow got a job at a major football school. Congrats to them. Both of them and I include RR will never sniff a top tier 1 job again. Ever. UA is a tier 2 job at best. SDSU...tier 3. Give RR credit...he got into a power 5 conference at a school with essentially no football tradition in an area perfect for his system and he has done o.k.

I think he is smart enough to never leave UA. He must know by now he has been 'exposed' as a head coach. There are the top coaches and then 2nd tier guys and then I think a RR is in the next outside group. RR is the football version of Paul Westhead.

You are right, you win - he's a complete fraud and should coach high school. His record of 153-104 is hands down the worst in college football, in fact most other coaches have a winning percentage of 9000%. His 6-5 Bowl Game record is the worst in college football history. His 5 conference/division titles are at least 100 below the next best coach in college. Yep he's a terrible coach - what are people thinking. In fact there should a College Football hiring committee that should consult you for every coaching hire because you are a coach in HS in South Carolina and you have the inside scoop on everything football and coaching related. I give up. Arizona should fire Rich Rod. What was I thinking. I forgot that only coahes that lose 1 game every 15 years meet your bar. Perhaps Saban and everyone else just outright sucks.

Oh and since we are looking at stats - as context Rich Rod has a higher winning percentage and more wins then Ferentz and Fitzgerald and Brett B who are 3 coaches that are not at risk of losing their jobs anytime soon. Granted he did not make things happen at Michigan but that does not make him a fraud and a terrible coach.

By your token Saban is terrible as well - 15-17 at Miami and only 34-24 at MSU with 3 bowl losses. Alabama should fire him immediately!!!

Listen Tarun, I know I touched a nerve in you for posting that I have met him and he is not what meets the eye and that he is not the type of coach you think he is but the proof is in what he has won over his career.I post on this board everyday and I know you do so I apologize if I offended you for talking about about Rich Rod. He is not what you see on TV bud and he is not the only coach. Spurrier is worse. Les Miles is exactly what you see and is a GREAT guy as is Bobby Bowden and his sons. RR did well at WV and I think his ability as a top college football coach was exposed at UM and continues to be exposed at Arizona. He just fired a DC who has been with him forever and is responsible for his success at WV. Arizona was bad on defense because of some injuries this year but more on RR's recruiting. He has never learned as a HC and never will. His recruiting methods were the same in Ann Arbor as his lack of attention at the other parts of the game. Rod used to be the OC at Clemson as well. Do you remember that? He was a damn good OC. We used to take our kids to their camp and it was a good one. He is an OC not a HC and by the way...Saban is on the verge of a possible 5TH national championship and has won them at 2 different schools. No comparison between those two bud-not even in the same ball park. None of it really matters now anyways-just two guys with two different opinions. I do love your idea of me being on a hiring consultation board for coaches though. Those guys would get fired a little quicker for failing when they make millions of dollars. I bet me and you would get fired for just being late to our jobs.

People fire their long time friends all the time - Hoke fired Borges. A couple other coaches just recently fired their long time OC/DCs this year - that does not make them bad coaches. I don't know RR, Hoke etc and I am not going to go based on your meetings of them - he seemed like a nice guy when he was at Michigan - family man, dedicated to his kids, etc so good for him. He has done more in AZ in 4 years then any coach did there in the past 2 decades including 1 championship game, 2 wins against AZ, 3 seasons with 8+ wins, bowl games every year. So if you think he was exposed as a coach while he is sitting at a Power 5 school and doing better then his predecessor then I am not sure what your bar is. I know you have a personal dislike for him beccause of his time at UM as do others, but calling him "not HC material" might be one of the most ridiculous things I have ever heard. The only thing that has been exposed about RR is that he is not an "elite" coach but to say he's not HC material is insane. He is better then half the coaches in the BIG, etc. No he is no JH, Urban, MD, Dabo, Saban, etc and you have no idea why he fired Casteel - could be a number of reasons. Differences in opinions, etc - a lot of things can happen.
I will say something else unpopular. Borges was fired after Michigan had it's best offensive performance in PPG over a decade because everyone thought he sucked - nobody wanted to blame Hoke. instead we hired Nuss who then instantly created an offense that had the lowest PPG in a decade. Lots of things go into this. An outsider probably thought Michigan was insane to let Borges go because that was Hoke's guy, etc but we knew the real reason.

Rich Rod ain't getting canned from AZ any time soon. He's going to stay as a Power 5 conference coach - maybe not an elite school, but there are tons of Power 5 schools that were he available today, would take a chance on him. I hated what he did at Michigan - but honestly if you want to blame someone, blame our AD at that time for not even considering Les Miles. Then blame Brandon for ignoring JH and going with Hoke. Our arrogance was to blame for us making back to back bad hires/fits for Michigan not the ineptitude of coaches. Not all coaches will be successful in every school they go to. I bet Urban would be a flop if he coached at Stanford because of the academic standards there. Brett B was a hit at Wisconsin, sucks at Arkansas - does not mean he can't coach. Coaching is not a "hey if you can coach you can do it everywhere" If that was the case Saban would be in the NFL, Urban would be in the NFL, Dantonio would be the Bama coach, etc. Coaching is about the right place and the right fit. I wrote about how I think Dantonio is in the best place for his style - I don't think he can get the same type of success at some other schools. Rich Rod was just a horrible horrible fit for Michigan - we don't have patience and an appetite for mediocrity even for one year like some other schools do. Rich Rod wants results in X years Michigan wants results now - that's a divorce in the waiting. JH is perfect because he wants to win now. Hoke was the same "we have too much youth..." Michigan needs instant results and quite frankly there are probably one 3-4 coaches that could be successful at Michigan - JH, Shaw, Urban, etc.

I am willing to bet if Dantonio was the Michigan coach and he went 22-17 after his first 3 years at Michigan, we would have fired him especially after he went 6-7 in his third year. Feel free to disagree with me - no way we keep him and Michigan fans would want him gone right away! We are not patient. Dantonio had that record at MSU his first 3 years before he turned it around. Dantonio's style would not have worked at Michigan either - would that have made him a bad coach/OC material only???

Your are entitled to your opinion Tarun, however, I respectfully disagree with you. In my opinion. Rich Rodriguez is not a good head coach. He is a much better coordinator which still makes him a good football coach just not a HEAD COACH. Not very good at managing a program and especially people within his program. West Virginia was his niche and he was a GOD there during his time. He became the new flavor of football as we all say among us coaches in 2006. It was natural for him to ride that and move from WV to try bigger and better things. His Michigan experience has certainly humbled him though and his time at Arizona has still proven that he applied very little from his leadership failings in Ann Arbor to his new gig in the desert. What do I know though. I am just a dumb high school football coach he thinks he knows everything correct? It is sad today in our culture that a person's opinion has become equated with being a know it all. Good luck Tarun and quit worrying about Rashan Gary. He will be wearing a Michigan helmet in August. Just thank yourself Harbaugh is now at the helm because Rich Rod may have not offered him since he plays defense!!!!
