To "consolidate" everything (long post ahead), I needed to write it out. Let me know what I missed.

Assumptions: Harbaugh is returning with a contract extension of 4-6 years (likely 5), with low buyouts, high incentives and a lower base salary than he's had.

Joe Moorhead is coming to be the new OC or co-OC with Josh Gattis, who IS returning. We will also assume Moore, Warriner, Jay Harbaugh and Brian Jean-Mary are coming back.

Obviously Don Brown is gone.

McDaniels and Shoop are for sure the next to be OUT, so there are three AC spots open, two if you count Moorhead as in.

Along with Jim Harbaugh, the new DC will determine the fates of Nua and Zordich.

Lastly, there was interest in a HS head coach in the Detroit area for a role as an assistant at Michigan but it doesn't look like that is coming to fruition.

That puts the staff at (we think):

HC: Jim Harbaugh
Co-OC: Joe Moorhead
Co-OC: Josh Gattis
DC: TBD

QB: Jim Harbaugh/Moorhead
RB: Jay Harbaugh*
WR: Josh Gattis
TE: Sherrone Moore
OL: Ed Warriner

DC: TBD
DL: Shaun Nua**
LB: Brian Jean-Mary
CB: Mike Zordich
S: TBD

*Balas has said Jay Harbaugh could move to Special Teams only.
**Jim Harbaugh and new DC will determine the fate of Nua and Zordich.

With two spots available the two most likely options seem to be...

1. Hire a DC who can also coach safeties (i.e. Derek Mason), add a RB coach (i.e. Mike Hart) and move Jay Harbaugh to Special Teams only (Harbaugh did come to Michigan with a Special Teams coach).

2. Leave Jay Harbaugh with the RBs, hire a DC (i.e. Charlie Strong who would also help with LBs or DL) and hire someone else to coach the Ss (i.e. Steve Clinkscale).

Note that when I say "i.e." I'm literally just providing an example of someone who fits the bill, it's not a suggestion or prediction...don't get all bent out of shape about the names.

Last, we can't completely rule out the co-DC route, but that doesn't change the two options...whether that one new guy and Brian Jean-Mary (basically option 1) or if it is two new guys who come in with the "co" title together (basically option 2).

...clear as mud?
