Red Berenson on Andrew Copp: "I was hoping he would take some time and think through the gravity of the situation."
Berenson: "I can't say he is ready to play for Winnipeg. I don't think he'd be out of place if he played in a game tonight."
Berenson: "(NHL teams) are going to try and sign all juniors they can; they don't care if they are ready."
Berenson: "I haven't talked to Winnipeg; they won't call me."
Berenson: :"I just wish he would stay and do it right - graduate with
your teammates and classmates. Take this team to another level."
Red: "I told Andrew that I hope he makes it and plays in the NHL next
year because I will feel sick if you are playing in the minors."
Red: "We lost to a senior-laden Minnesota team. Well how about a senior-laden Michigan team?"
Berenson: We're going to have a good team and he was going to be a big part of it.
Berenson: "I'm not mad at Andrew Copp for leaving. I'm disappointed disappointed for our team."
Red: If you ask our former players that are in the NHL and ask them if
they'd give up their senior year to play in the minors .. no chance.
Berenson: "It's a big loss for our team and I don't think it's necessary"
Berenson referenced Brendan Morrison as someone who greatly benefited
from staying for his senior season after a strong junior year
Red on what NHL teams tell prospects: They give you a good line about
playing for a good coach and learning the system and on and on and on
All in all, Red felt he didn't get enough of a chance to convince Copp to stay and felt he rushed his decision.
Red: I knew it was going to happen. I just needed him to be stronger
& more confident in what we were doing at Michigan. That didn't
happen.
