I called it right when it happened, no hindsight. That was a terrible decision that cost them a chance to win the game. Doesn't mean they would have won if they went for it, but kicking a FG there is waving the white flag. You are much more likely to lose when you kick a FG there. Just no way around it.

I would have gone for it. I will now defend Franklin.

How have teams done against UM down at the goal line? Not very well. Ask Minny and IU. Ask PSU during this game.

I think Franklin blinked and got scared and decided there was plenty of time (there was) and that his defense could stop UM and that if PSU scored a TD...they could win. The best a td does is get them within 2 points and they still have to get the 2 pt conversion. That only ties the game.

Getting within 5 points just allows PSU to still be in the game even if they give up a fg. I thought it wasn't the worse based on who he was playing (UM) and the team he was coaching.

Here is another way of looking at it. How many times was PSU down within the 5 yard and didn't come away with a TD? Had to be at least 4-5 times. The percentages aren't looking very favorable at that time.

All that being said...even if PSU doesn't make it they pin UM back so he should have gone for it. My point is that the call wasn't terrible based on all the data points involved.

It wasn't.

Dude, it was a terrible call. Getting 3 there is not going to win the game. He crapped the bed. He would STILL need a TD to win!!!!! If he can't get one with four shots from inside the 10, how is he getting one later in the game, after he's burned all his timeouts?

Maybe he get's the TD from outside the 20 yard line on a long pass (against Peppers earlier). I hear you loud and clear but again what makes you think PSU was going to score whereas he got 3 pts. Maybe he thinks that PSU is going to get the ball back another 2 times for another 2 fg's.

You do see his logic. Why go for a TD when you aren't going to make it vs. 3 pts and a TD later. I agree. I would have gone for it but it wasn't the worst call....there were about 8 minutes left in the game.

How about this question. What are the percentages PSU scores if they go for it. Give me a percentage. Be honest. I would say 20% at best. Again...ask Minny and IU and even PSU is this game how they have done on important inside the 5 yard line attempts to score a TD in the 4th quarter or OT.

It's ZERO if I remember correctly. Zero. Zippo. So odds are PSU is coming away with Zero. Did I mention Zero?
