This changes every year, has way more to do with matchups than conference strength. Last year the ACC went 4-6ACC: 9 wins, 3 losses and dominant over the SEC. Eat your heart out ESPN and SEC fans.
Top to bottom the ACC is the dominant conference and the rest are up for grabs.
Hope UM pounds tOSU, PSU and Iowa, et al. Good luck in 2017.
The only people that say, "Bowl games aren't that important" are usually the losers.
Try this:
Extra practices
Better recruiting
More playing time for the players and staff
More $
More excitement for the fans
More $ from donors
More travel opportunities
More TV and media coverage
More recognition for the program throughout the sporting world
More player and coaches recognition
Increased student enrollment
Other than that you might say it's pretty much a waste of time!
If your Michigan and lose a bowl game
You aren't getting a worse recruiting class.
More playing time? Doesn't make sense
More money? Not much
More excitement? Nope. Unless you win the national title. If you had a great season. People are gonna be excited anyway
More travel opportunities? No?
More media attention? Definite no. I haven't heard Florida state at all after their win. Your gonna hear they beat Michigan about 2-3 times
The sporting world knows more? Nope unless the game is a natty
Player and coaches rec? Nope. If you play well you will be known. Not if you win or lose
Only thing I'll say S.S. is that in the Way too early poll for next season FSU seems to be listed #2 behind Bama. Don't think they'd get that lofty status without a W over Michigan.
What was interesting was that FSU wasn't particularly good this year in the ACC...seven ACC team equaled or bettered their conference record....
While this may be fact.....if you dive into the particulars you'll see FSU easily could have come out as a 1 loss team. Last second tough luck loss to UNC and we know how tough FSU played Nat'l Champ Clemson, complete with a bit of questionable officiating that went the Tiger's way that was huge. If you want to say FSU wasn't particularly good then go for it, but I would say that would be like saying Michigan wasn't particularly good......and I would call that BS.
One loss and they may have been in the POs. 5 losses and they'd have played in the Weed Wacker marigold bowl on December 14. GBGB"74FSU also beat Miami with a last second blocked PAT (how often does that happen?)
After being behind all night to NC State...FSU rallied with less than three minutes on the clock to win that one.
FSU did lose in the last 30 seconds on a UNC FG..and was playing Clemson close.
While it might be true that FSU could have been a one loss team, it is just as true that FSU could have been a team with five conference losses....there was little to separate 5-3 FSU from the other seven conference teams with 5-3 conference records.
