against quality Michigan teams (2011/15). 2011 was an ass whooping and 2015 was just depressing.
I looked at the MSU roster and saw a vast majority are either from Ohio or Michigan. Those two states make up the core of this rivalry and we do not have an edge in that regard.
Ohio kids want to play at OSU and beat Michigan. If they can't do it for OSU, they can still go to MSU and play against Michigan.
Some Michigan kids get overlooked by U of M and they can use that as a catalyst to play above and beyond against an arch-nemesis for MSU.
Then you look at Michigans roster and its mostly national. You have to teach this nasty rivalry to kids, while Dantonio just has too coach these kids.
QB- no Michigan or Ohio kids in top 3.
RB- no Michigan or Ohio kids.
FB- Vansumeren/Wangler from Michigan. No one from Ohio
TE- no Michigan or Ohio kids.
WR- Perry/DPJ and no Ohio kids.
OL- Onwenu/Paea/Mayfield from Michigan and Hudson\Ulizio from Ohio.
DL- Marshall/Hutchinson from Michigan and no one from ohio.
LB- Ross from Michigan and Furbush from Ohio.
DB- Hill/Thomas/Kelly-Powell/Gray from Michigan and Kinnell from Ohio.
Five of those kids start and the rest are too young or passed over. It might not be a big deal against Wisconsin or PSU, but man thats a hindrance in the battle of the State games.
Maybe having more Michigan kids can flip the rivalry, but is it enough to win a National Championship?
Brings up a big question... Rather have a stacked deck for national relevancy or recruit regionally to beat MSU?
Don't think you can beat OSU, with consistency, with just Ohio leftovers and instate talent. Let alone a National Championship.
Sorry so long, but this week is one of the most important game in modern Michigan history. Win and two weeks of harmony. Lose, and we are back where we started from with two weeks of negative pub.
