When a person says one of our position coaches is a horrible coach......does anyone wonder if the person making the statement has ever observed him coaching in a practice or a game? (I would think that would be important to make their assessment)

Or is that position group’s on-field performance enough for the person to make that statement?

I think there are so many variables that go into the on-field performance of each position group...as a result...it’s nearly impossible for the average fan to make an assessment of the coaches ability to coach their group.

Some variables: age, playing experience, injuries, defensive scheme, ownership by the players to work hard to improve, other position group’s performance impacting their performance (example: no pass rush really hurts the DBs...poor run blocking hurts the RB & QB).

I am interested to hear what other ppl think. Maybe I am way off base for thinking the ppl saying “coach so&so blows “ does not have a clue on their coaching ability.

Note - insiders who get to see them at practices......and/or get to talk to former players who have observed practice - that type of feedback I can understand.
