The situation with Austin is obviously unique and has been discussed several times on here.
Austin provides value to the team in the form of inspiration, ethics, character, etc.
It's tricky, however, to have him on an active scholarship if he will be unable to contribute in the games. Although we're still deriving some value from his scholarship, it's not the same value as we would get by having another player who could fully contribute in games and in practices.
I'm not suggesting that Beilein pull his scholarship. I think that Michigan is showing tremendous (copyright Lloyd Carr) moral fiber by honoring his scholarship.
My question is this: Could Michigan petition the NCAA to allow Austin to remain on an active scholarship that wouldn't count against our allotment?
In my perfect world, I'd like to see Austin remain on an active scholarship, but still allow Michigan to have the full quantity of scholarships at its disposal to use on players other than Austin.
Is there any precedence for this? Despite the NCAA generally being an idiotic entity, do you think they would be open to this?
