Poor tackling, poor blocking. Failure to seal the ends on defense. How man times did 24 simply cut to the outside with no one there within 5-10 yards. Even when we put 10 in the box late in the game, they would get 4-5 yards right up the middle.
I still like McNamara - if he can throw the ball. The game really turned when he went out in the first half. Milton cannot put together drives, and we have to get this defense off the field as much as possible. Couldn't get to the QB even when we brought the house, and our DLs don't get their arms up into the passing lanes. DBs were much better. But we were a sieve against the running game.
Injuries are a factor. We missed Jackson today as a returner and receiver. Sanristil's muff late in the first half was a big lift for PSU and downer for us. San also dropped any easy catch that put us behind the chains. PSU pressed up on our receivers once they knew that McNamara could only throw the short stuff. McGrone ACL is a gut punch. We can't lean on Ross, and Shibley is no more than serviceable. Barrett runs himself out of running plays too often. Paye did not look near 100%.
Boneheaded call of the game was running McNamara out of the backfield and doing a direct snap to the running back. There no deception, no one went with McNamara, they knew it had to be a run.
Milton is looking more and more like Devin Gardner, who apparently trained him in the off season. Tentative with the ball, erratic on throws.
We'll need a mercy rule when we play OSU.
