With Tony Tuioti recently being named the Director of Player Personnel I thought that I would put together a watch list of Polynesian football prospects that could end up on Michigan's radar.

First off, just who are Polynesians? To keep it simple, this is from Wikipedia:

The Polynesian people consists of various ethnic groups that speak Polynesian languages, a branch of the Oceanic languages, and inhabit Polynesia. The native Polynesian people of New Zealand and Hawaii are minorities in their homelands.

Polynesians, including Samoans, Tongans, Niueans, Cook Islands Māori, Tahitian Mā'ohi, Hawaiian Māoli, Marquesans and New Zealand Māori, are a subset of the Austronesian peoples. They share the same origins as the indigenous peoples of maritime Southeast Asia, Madagascar, and Taiwan. This is supported by genetic,[5] linguistic[6] and archaeological evidence.

When it comes to football, many are of Tongan and, especially, Samoan origin. A couple of prospects on the below list are even still playing in American Samoa. Many are from Hawaii and other western states with large Polynesian populations (Nevada, Utah, the entire west coast). There are a few schools not on the Far West with a large Polynesian base. Euless Trinity High in Texas, the home of 2016 Michigan target Chris Daniels, is one such school.

Here is a link from the Polynesian Football Hall of Fame with a map of Polynesia and a listing of the ten largest Polynesian communities in the U.S..

http://www.polynesianfootballhof.org/history/polynesia

You will see from the below list that many Polynesians are born defensive linemen. Their unique combination of size, power, quickness and aggressiveness make them ideal fits at that spot. They can also excel at other spots. Troy Polamalu was a stud safety, Junior Seau a great LB and Jack Thompson and Marcus Mariota outstanding QBs. Michigan's most recent Polynesians include a fullback, DT and incoming TE.

So who will be next? I'm pretty sure that at least a couple of kids from the below list will end up as Wolverines in the years ahead.

One final note. I compiled this list by quickly scanning my database and adding picking out kids with clearly Polynesian names. There are, however, several prospects out there who are Polynesian but do not have Polynesian names. I know there are at least two that I am missing from this list.
