What he drew from a win over a weaker opponent in WMU: "We out-personneled our opponents, as you know. Our football players are better than theirs, and it showed on the field. It's difficult to know, in those situations, how much you really improved.

"Are you doing it because you're just that much better of an athlete, or have your techniques improved that make you a better football team? That's the one thing you've really got to concern yourself with. Look at the techniques, how we played, how our offense came off the ball. Those are the things I'm still looking forward to, because I don't think we're really, yet, controlling the line of scrimmage as much as we should.

"We've got to be more consistent when we do it. We did move the football, we did some good things, but it's a little hard to determine whether we just out-personneled them, or we had a great deal of improvement. It all boils down to, can we improve our techniques when we come down to the big opponents?"

Offensive line improvements: "I thought they were a little better. I saw a couple of people moving their feet and getting some movement, but I didn't see it the entire way across the line. I really look for that. I really like to see them coming off as a unit, where we're really getting into good, low, fire-out positions and coming off the ball as a unit.

"There are two or three guys who seem to be moving their feet and getting a little better position. I'm not going to mention any names, but they do, and some of the other ones don't seem yet to want to get down there, or at least have a hard time getting down there.

"I'm looking for them to become more of a unit, and not one or two guys doing it and then the other guys not. That can cause some problems. I'm looking for that. I saw some improvement, you bet. But is it enough? I hesitate to say that. I'm going to look again this week, and see if we can't come out better as an entire unit on the offensive line."

Missing only his second game at Michigan Stadium since 1969: "I have to attend a function, a very close friend for a wedding. I promised I would go. You know they're not Michigan people, or they wouldn't be [planning it] on Saturday.

"I'm going to miss this game, but I'm going to put it up to you and to all these fans out there to coach these Wolverines to victory while I'm not here.."
