• Michigan's win over Wisconsin: "You know that I'm not a fan of night football, for colleges, but I have to say the Michigan-Wisconsin game provided a great atmosphere for Michigan football. The game was great, the night was nice, and the crowd made me really proud to be a Wolverine.
"Those seats were completely full, and I'll guarantee you, very few of them vacated them until after that final whistle. They stayed there and watched that game, even though it was not really close at the end. The backing they gave to this team buoyed them and helped them to a great victory.
"While the final score was a decisive victory, it wasn't an easy one. It was certainly a wonderful victory for the Wolverines, and I felt very, very proud as I walked out of that stadium."
• Perspective on the Michigan State game: "Since I was a high school coach and actually took players to Michigan State for visits, I've known the coaching staffs up there for a number of years. Duffy Daugherty was a good friend. I've worked with John McVay in high school as a coach and at the University of Dayton. He ended up being a coach at Michigan State.
"Duffy Daugherty was always a friend. I told him his wife looked like Barbara Stanwyck, and she liked me better than he did [laughs]. George Perles and I coached together in college. We lived across the street from each other, and used to leave our cars home. We each only had one, [and left one] so that the wives would have a car if they needed it and we drove to work together, him one week and me the next.
"We were close from that standpoint, and we've remained friends over the years. While you want to kick their tails on the football field, there's an awful lot of nice people up at Michigan State.
"This is a rivalry that you want to have. It's to be played on the football field, and it's to be really fought hard out there while it's going on. I remember we played hard, but I don't remember having a lot of fights or extra penalties or things like that. It was always just a really hard-fought football game for control of your own state.
"That's what I would like to see our fans, and everybody from our school and their school, keep in mind. We're both good universities, and we represent our state. If we go in and say this is how we want to play it, we should come out of there, shake hands with each other and keep going.
"That's the way I look at this rivalry, and I'd hope the fans and the rest of us will fall in line and remember it's a football game between two good universities, and the kids that play it are going to really try hard to be representative of their schools."
• Taking on the Spartans: "As [MSU quarterback Brian] Lewerke goes, so goes Michigan State. If he hits passes on you, it's going to be a tough game to play. We know that our defense has done a pretty good job of pressuring quarterbacks and getting after them. It will be important that we're able to do that again against Lewerke.
"I don't care if it's 3-0, or 7-6, or it's 45-3. I don't care. As long as we've got the most points when we come out of that stadium.
"There are so many breaks that happen during a football game — fumbles, interceptions, penalties at the wrong time. All these things become factors that you can't figure into a football game. All I know is, we have to play our best.
"We're going to have a really tough game on our hands, but the idea is, if we keep playing as a team, if the defense gives us some turnovers, if the defense gives us a couple of those, if we can hold them and we can control the ball on offense, I think we're going to have a good chance against this team up there."
