I’ve been writing a screenplay with a friend from law school, probably just for fun (we both were screen arts minors in undergrad, me at UM him at Cal) but it’s horror, so we’ve been watching all the horror movies we can to see “where it goes wrong” and what’s really scary.
Forbes had an article from a few years ago that detailed a study in which test viewers had their heart rates monitored to determine what movie was generally the most unsettling, and which had the highest peak of “jump” style scares. The conclusion was that Sinister had people the most uncomfortable (average heart rate up 24 beats) and also had the most effective jump scare (heart rate jumped to 141). But, frankly, I really don’t get the ghost/demon thing at all. Little kids crawling around oddly and speaking in weird voices? Meh.
Watched Martyrs last night. Not jump scary. But maybe the most disturbing film I’ve ever seen. Ends with someone being flayed alive, which I’ve never seen on film before. Very hard to forget. I also found Hell House, an extremely low budget found footage film, very well done and scary, far scarier than anything I’ve seen from horror dynamos James Wan (conjuring, insidious franchises) or Jason Blum (sinister, Friday the 13th, lights out, dozens more)
what movie REALLY scared the hell out of you? Had you wanting to sleep with a light on? Made you think when you heard a noise in the night?
