Good Evening Everyone,
I'm sorry to be a bummer tonight, and by now I think my reputation precedes me as someone who doesn't normally do this, but I felt this story needed to be shared...
One of the greatest honors of my life was serving with Naval Special Warfare, and in particular serving for Commodore Meek. The Special Warfare/Operations community is a brotherhood on a whole different level, so we're all very close. My wife also served as the Ombudsman for our command, and we got to spend many fun nights with the Meeks over dinner and drinks. Roger (my former Commodore) was planning to celebrate his retirement in Coronado this weekend. Of course, that was before he found out his son was one of those shot and killed last night. His name was Justin, and he was 23. According to some of the stories I've read, he may have been protecting his sister, otherwise the Meeks might be mourning 2 dead children today.
These things happen far too frequently now, and I think we're all starting to brush them off a little too easily. I know I've been guilty of exactly that. This isn't intended to be a call to arms or anything silly like that. I really just wanted to share this young man's story. I know many of you will say "sorry for your loss", and while I'll appreciate the sentiment, it's not my loss...but it is someone I got to know a little and he deserves to be humanized as do his grieving parents.
What I do know...and not just because he was a victim of tragedy...is that Justin Meek was a good kid.
Thanks for allowing me to share. Click below to learn a little more about Justin.
