In full disclosure, I'm an enormous Atlanta Braves fan.
The NL ROY race last year was awesome. Soto and Acuna were really close, but Acuna just edged him out. There were some nasty SPs mixed in there too (Buehler and Flaherty).
This year, it didn't look competitive as of three weeks ago. Pete Alonso was taking a Sunday stroll in the park towards the ROY. Now, another young Brave, Austin Riley, has absolutely mashed his way into the competition. Here are the numbers as of June 5th:
Alonso: 59 games played, .340 OBP, .618 SLG, 20 HR, 45 RBI, .391 wOBA, 149 wRC+, 2.1 WAR
Riley: 18 games played, .368 OBP, .732 SLG, 9 HR, 25 RBI, .445 wOBA, 178 wRC+, 0.8 WAR
Long way to go, and Riley is certainly going to cool down, but these are some pretty incredible numbers for a pair of rookie sluggers.
