So many of you were kind enough to read my "proud papa" post about my son being admitted to Michigan. And some of the tech-savvy among us were kind enough to talk or message him about his top two choices (U of M -- of course -- and the University of Chicago). Ultimately he chose Chicago. We're very proud of him and I fully support his choice. I've even taken to wearing a very handsome ball cap with the Chicago "C" on it.
That said, I'm struck by the fact that 10 of his classmates are going to enroll at Michigan this Fall -- including our next door neighbor. She's the third of three straight Michigan students for that family. (I think they're trying to rub it in.)
So the other night we are sitting around the dinner table and we're talking about who is going where in his class. I ask about Michael -- one of the best football players I've ever coached and one of my absolute favorite kids. Our son says "oh, he just decided -- he's going to Michigan."
"I KNEW I ALWAYS LIKED THAT KID!!!" (At this point, Mrs. Varnsen shoots me the "this is NOT about you and you WILL support our son" look. Hey, I'm human, ok? This Michigan thing lasts a lifetime, get over it.)
I saw Michael at one of the graduation parties on Saturday and shared that story -- and a big "GOBLUE!!" with him. We had a great laugh and I'm going to send him "The Rivalry" and "Michigan Football Memories" so he's properlyindoctrinated educated before he shows up for classes.
I am, of course, very proud of our son. And I am thrilled that he found a school he is in love with and that is the right fit for HIM. But it is also great to know that Michigan will be welcoming one of the finest young men I know this Fall. He's going to be a perfect fit at Michigan, and I can't wait to see him at The Big House.
Thanks again to all of you who corresponded or spoke with our son. I really appreciate it.
