So my daughter is 8 years old and she "tried out" for a travel soccer team sponsored by our local pro soccer team, the Richmond Kickers, and Team USA development. I say "tried out" because I think she would have to be hammered or high on meth not to make the team. Objectively, she's a decent soccer player.... but I don't know the sport that well (baseball was my game and while she killed it in tee ball she likes soccer more) and she will get coached by a licensed coach and current/former player for the Kickers. So I saw that as a positive.
Anyway, it seems more structured and professional than the YMCA and some of the local rec leagues. Definitely more serious about developing skills which I like. But she is still only 8. I guess as long as she enjoys it I am cool... but how young did some of you guys start your kids in real competitive sports versus simply rec?
