Is that getting torn down in the near-future? Thought I had heard some rumors that it was, just wondering as I'm having a conversation about St. John on another board (BWI).

Never been in St. John Arena, but I've passed by it many times, I may check it out (if it's open) when I'm in Columbus Saturday.

Yes, it's end us nearing. If you do get a chance check it out inside. Classic older arena with wooden chairs and steep steep seating that gives you the feeling of flying above the court below.

If you are ever on Campus before a game you need to go there for the Skull Session, Saturday morning. The band plays for free in the old arena with acoustics that shake the seats, walks, and floors.

As a fan I agree. St. John's created a true home court advantage for OSU and rocked. Value City of course has a professional feel to it and not college oriented at all!

Yeah, I don't like Value City too much for basketball. I've unfortunately heard it's considerably worse for ice hockey: both sight-lines and attendance (even if there is 8K there, which is a good crowd, it's still 10K empty seats), which is what I'll be in Columbus for Saturday.

Thanks all, I'll see if St. John is open during the afternoon!

Let's not get too hasty, here. VCA has some kick-ass, clean bathrooms that are open for tailgating and that's a big plus!

There are no immediate plans, but everything has been moved out of it

Basketball and hockey moved out of St. John in the 1998-1999 seasons when the Schottenstein opened. In 2012, a donor provided funds for a new 4000 seat arena that will be built at the corner of Ackerman about a mile north of St. John. The new arena will house wrestling, gymnastics, volleyball and other sports that are currently in St. John.

St. John occupies a huge space in a prominent location on campus and won't be used for anything except football pep rallies after the new smaller facility goes on line.

It's days are numbered. There is talk of building a new set of dorms on the site, but I haven't seen anything other than speculation.

St. John had some really terrible seats though

If you sat in the upper deck about the baskets, your view was completely obstructed and you could only see the action at the other end. Those seats were worthless.

Thx --- I didn't get to see St. John on Saturday (got into town too late)

maybe October, I'll be there for a football game.

OSU could honestly use a hockey-only facility --- they'll never do it unless some donor fronts $80MM or so, but wow, Value City was terrible for hockey. Awful.

Thats pretty much what people say about all sports there.
