We live north of Chicago (Evanston), near, but not on, Lake Michigan and I was thinking of trying to buy a bigger 3-seat Sea Doo for next Summer. We have two boys who will be 8 and 6 next summer and I really want a way to get us out on the water. Getting a boat around here is impractical for a number of reasons (limited slips, cost, logistics). So I was thinking that a Sea Doo might be a good way for us to enjoy living near Lake Michigan without all the cost and logistics of a boat.

I've been checking them out online, but there are a ton of models and features, so I figured I'd throw it out here to see if anyone had any knowledge to share. In particular, I was wondering:

1. Is there a best time to buy? I saw that they just launched a rebate of up to $500 on 2017 models. I wasn't planning on using it until next Summer, so if there are better deals after the season, I'll wait. Since my wife is skeptical and this is on me if it's a waste of money, I'd love to get the best deal that I can.

2. Thoughts on the best models, features or accessories?

3. I saw that among the accessories that they sell is a tow-point (for towing rafts, for example). How well does this work?

I grew up on the water (sailing and boating), but don't have much experience with PWC, so any other thoughts, comments or insider connections are much appreciated!
