OT: any experience of National Guard service?

have a son going in to senior year of high school - good grades (3.7GPA) at a top high school in Wisconsin, 32 ACT - son wants to get in to West Point - as a way of increasing his odds of an appointment at West Point he is considering graduating early and starting with National Guard in January, with hopes of getting a Congressional appointment to West Point later 2018 or 2019 - does this make sense to anyone with experience here?
