Yesterday, former redshirt sophomore offensive tackle Jalen Mayfield's father spoke to the Detroit Free Press about his son's chances of returning to Michigan after declaring for the draft weeks ago. He made it appear there was no shot his son would return to the team, which is what we've reported for weeks.
"He’s not playing," Brian Mayfield said. "Not for eight games. And there’s no guarantee they’re making it through.
He signed with an agent, though he has not accepted money or gifts per his dad. However ...
"He's done. He's all set," Brian Mayfield said. "He's signed and stuff. He's not going to play. He could play because he didn't take any money yet technically until he leaves, but he's not going back. And there are some other guys that opted out and are not going to play, also."
There were rumors today that Mayfield might be reconsidering that decision. Per some close to him, the door is still (slightly) ajar, but a lot of fence-mending needs to occur. Several in the building are working on him, and he's open to listening, but as of now he's still planning on working out with Oregon lineman Penei Sewell (another who opted out) and flying to California next week to start.
Some of his family would love to see him back at Michigan for another year. Others, however, still need some convincing ... and it sounds as if Mayfield does, too.
Watch for more on this in the hours to come ...
