Gemon:
Didn't get to see a ton of his coverage skill because Jesuit avoided his side of the field for most of the game. On the rare occasion they threw his way, he was really good in coverage and it was either incomplete or stopped for a short gain. Heard his name called a lot throughout. Jesuit tore up the defense with bubble screens, wheel routes, and runs the other direction, but when they went to his side with those plays, they didn't go anywhere and he normally laid a pretty big hit. Also looked really fast.
German:
Had a couple of decent hits on the night. When he played nickel corner, the recievers he covered couldn't get open. He was ALWAYS right on their hip. When he played safety he was less impressive and I would have liked him to be more proactive. He played the FS spot and not the SS. They ran to his side a lot, and he was too patient in letting the ball carrier come to him, instead of coming up for the tackle. He probably could have saved his team a few first downs if he came up to make a stop and not waited on the ball carrier go get to him. This was happening on bubble screens and runs to his side. He did have a really impressive fumble recovery at the safety position that he fpught for because it looked like Jesuit had recovered. He didn't have a horrible night by any means, just wanted to see more. Especially since the word down here was that he had a really good off season. He did look really fast as well and did look to be thicker of the brothers. When he was on the sideline and cramping (more on that below) and trying to work it out, the athletic trainer was having him do the back peddle to sprint drill and he went from back peddle to sprint very quickly.
There are a few caveats to the negative parts of German at safety.
1. I am not sure which leg he injured last year, but a few minutes into the 3rd quarter he came put of the game with cramps. Missed a play and came back in for a few then came out with cramps again and never returned. I say that to say, I'm not sure if he was dealing with it the whole night and maybe that was the reason he wasn't being proactive on tackles from the FS spot. Just wondering if maybe that leg isn't back at full strength yet.
2. I believe FS is somewhat new to him, because I believe he use to be a corner as well.
3. I spoke with a life long DeSoto fan for a bit after the game, and he was telling me that DeSoto has never had a great defense, much less a good secondary despite having DB's go D1. That lends me to believe that maybe caveat 2 and 3 go hand in hand. Both he and Gemon look good in coverage (with the absolute potential to be elite), but maybe if FS is new to him after missing all of last year it was a lack of coaching about being more physical at safety. He just needs Zordich, Smith and Harbaugh to get their hands on him.
On both brothers:
They are both as tall as advertised.
They both need to add weight without a doubt. German looks thicker but both are thin.
Both very fast and physical when they do get their hands on you.
Texas doesn't allow press man, so that will be a learning curve for both. However, both play physical already, so with added weight and coaching, highly doubtful that will be an issue.
What I really liked about German in regards to his injury, is he never got down. Despite happening early in the third, he never once sat down, and until the clock hit 0 in the forth, he was stretching, drinking fluids, trying to run it off. Even picked up his helmet a few times in the 4th and appeared to be told no by the athletic trainer.
Despite the negatives written about German, it was obvious the talent was there when he was in the game, he just needs our coaching staff to coach him up.
Finally, it appears that the coaching staff picked up two very very good football players.
