1. JJ is him.
After rewatching some games from last season, one thing that was clear to me was that a lot of JJ's ball placement inconsistency appeared to be just from being a half beat slow in processing - which is to be expected from a first year starting QB. And there was every reason to believe that this would smooth itself out and slow down for him in year 2. We saw today: it really has. He wasn't as quick to evacuate the pocket. He knew what he was looking for on every pass. And some of those throws... damn. That's what a first round pick looks like.
2. OL Stock Down
No way to sugarcoat this: that was not good enough. The starters didn't dominate like they should have, and the 2's looked like they were the 2's for a reason. They didn't consistently get a push or open up holes for Corum and Edwards, and JJ was under more pressure than he should have been. Sherrone Moore will not be happy with that performance from his unit. That did not look like the 2-time Joe Moore winners with a 12-13 man competition pushing everyone to a dominant level. It looked disjointed and uninspired and has to be better when the real games begin.
3. Pass Rush Still A Question
No sacks and very few pressures. That, too, needs to get sorted by the conference season.
4. WR Depth Still A Question, Too.
It looks like Wilson & Johnson are well ahead of the pack... and WIlson & Johnson won't be confused with Marvin Harrison Jr and Emeka Egbuka. The question of who else can contribute was given little new data today.
5. New Contributors Flashing
Keon Sabb was all over the field. Ernest Hausmann flashed. Josh Wallace looked good.
6. Depth Chart Observations
Mullings, Hall and Stokes are 3-4-5 at RB, although Stokes flashed more today and will clearly jockey with Hall. McBurrows & Harris were the second CB unit with Johnson & Walker out. The second OL unit was Henderson-El-Hadi-Crippen-Gentry-Jones, with Anderson, Bounds and Connor Jones not on the 2-deep. It appears something called Josh Beetham is ahead of Marlin Klein at TE. Hibner didn't play, so we don't know where he falls. Cam Goode played a LOT - and not just in short yardage. He and Grant were in together even on some passing downs. TJ Guy appears to be ahead of Josaiah Stewart at EDGE.
7. Freshmen Getting On The Field
I'm sure there were a few more, but I saw Benjamin Hall, Fred Moore, Karmello English, Cameron Brandt, Trey Pierce, Jyaire Hill, Brandyn Hillman and DJ Waller.
