Possible philosophical question for this august group of thinkers on The Fort. Here I am with Mrs. wolvernole in our half-time home in beautiful ESCANABA MICHIGAN. Detroit whiffed, struck out, null-setted, vanished, went bankrupt on their chance to (rightfully) be called the official "Michigan State Fair." So I ask, what kind of wussy State would we be if we did not have an honest-to-God official State Fair.
C'mon somebody !
So since almost anyone can remember (maybe 1912) there has been (the only State in the country I have always understood to have TWO State Fairs) the "U.P. State Fair" in Escanaba, Michigan ! The huge fairgrounds here in Escanaba has always (until three years ago in 2014) been owned by none other than the State of Michigan. Meanwhile, the official "Michigan State Fair" in Detroit was (surprise, surprise) losing money like 'Uncle Fred at the casino' Bad.
So three years ago, the State apparently sold the City of Escanaba the fairgrounds up here, for $1. (to be clear, that's ONE DOLLAR). It has become a positive moneymaker, in the clear each and every year better than the previous, in part, due to Yooper volunteerism.
My problem is that they continue to humbly advertise as the "U.P. State Fair" OR I have actually seen it advertised as the "906 State Fair."
I say this half 'tongue-in-cheek" but if Ohio has a dang "State Fair," then I WANT a State Fair !
Hey, wolvernole PERSONALLY inviting all my Fort Wolverine fans to my house and then a one-mile drive to my "Michigan State Fair !" Would that be a blast !
Weigh in on your opinion....
