are both losing boat loads of players to the draft this year - I think OSU has 7 players with eligibility left that have declared. Curious how well they will stack up next year especially with an early game against Oklahoma. Notre Dame has an early test against MSU who will also be losing a fair amount of players especially if Conklin declares (which I would be surprised if he does not because he is a sure 1st round pick). Should be interesting to see what pans out next year - I can only imagine how Michigan's 2016 outlook would have looked had we lost Wormley, Butt, Chesson, & Lewis. Experience certainly matters in the college football game though both OSU and ND are stacked with talent across the board.

Regardless of how talented there will certainly be a learning curve next season. That coupled with a fairly stiff schedule, will probably lead to at least 3 losses, possibly more. But if Barrett returns for his final year, that group could make another run in two years. Not predicting that they'll win a NC, but they should be in the playoff conversation.

I'm wrong all the time....but I'm sort of leaning towards Conklin coming back for his senior year. I don't think he had a particularly dynamic season, since he was injured. I suspect he can't raise his draft status all that much more with another year of college under his belt, but if he is 1st round material I'm guessing it's late 1st round at best. I think his stock dropped quite a bit. Calhoun didn't raise his profile all that much and I think Cook's 1st roundiness was hurt by his injury. I'll be interested to see if Cook and Conklin go to any of the all star games and try to raise their stock. Some "guaranteed" 1st rounders stay away from the Senior Bowl, et al. Jack Allen will almost certainly be in a few showcase games.

Cook hurt his status by being arrogant not by his injury. Read some articles posted about him. Conklin will be a mid first round pick so not sure how much staying helps. If you can go in the first two rounds you go.

You thought Cook was arrogant? I've always thought of him as being just wee bit on the soft side. Cook does not interview very well. He doesn't suggest swagger to me at all....and I'm a huge Spartan.
I've always been a much bigger fan of Kirk Cousins than Cook...even as I am grateful for the contributions of both...I thought Cook was overlooked for captainship by his teammates because he was more follower than leader. I'd like to be a fly on the wall in his NFL interviews.
Cousins, for whatever else you want to say about him, was definitely a leader and had the full support of his teammates. You might be right though. Perception, frequently, is reality.

there are some red flags Cook has that will be noticed by teams as they look to draft him. He was a senior and his own teammates did not name him a team captain - that is pretty much unheard of in college football where a 3 year senior starter is not viewed as a leader and captain by his team. This team was kept together by Dantonio not Cook. Also, his arrogance when they beat Iowa was on national television - he showed no respect for Griffin and just came across as arrogant and cocky. I know Eric will probably chime in because he thinks MSU or their players walk on water but there were tons of articles and tweets even on ESPN about that. The first one is really going to make some folks think twice because that is the one position where evolving to become a leader is critical. Agree on your assessment about Cousins - his teammates respected him and he is getting their respect in the NFL now as well.

You know when I saw his Archie Griffin thing I just went, "oh no, what an immature kid." He acted like you might think a high schooler would. I did not think it was an "I walk on water" thing. I thought it was about someone who did not know how to act. Very immature. Unsophisticated to me. He never said a word about LJ Scott who was the real hero of that game. I don't think his teammates rejected him because they thought he as too big for his britches, but rather, because he was too small. He's a terrific football player, but with a lot of maturing left to go. Manziel would be more my definition of arrogant, immaturity. Cook, is still a kid to me.
I just don't see him ready to step in front of an nfl defense for awhile.

It is interesting how Cook's treatment of Griffin was such a highlight moment. If you watch the presentation from the year before Cardale Jones was even worse. He was also an OSU player and the dis was even worse. I am not a Cook apologist but the unequal treatment of the same behavior is interesting to say the least.
