Some things I think could potentially help this offense:
1) Use Evans in the slot and Hill as the RB in our 3 WR, 1 RB sets. Much better protection in the backfield. More of a RAC threat in the slot.
2) Further to #1, put Gentry in a personnel grouping with McKeon and Perry. What appears like 2 TE's to the opponent could easily morph to Gentry on the outside (he's faster than most of our WRs anyhow), Evans in the slot, and Perry on the outside. In any case, I would try Gentry at the WR position. We need more size out there with Black out.
3) Feature Higdon in the running game vs IU. No looking over the shoulder. Feed him 20-25 times and see if we can find a rhythm by using one back instead of 3.
4) Peters should be brought in for a series (or 2) against IU if O'Korn looks shaky again. Much like O'Korn came in vs Florida. Keep the pressure on him. If Peters performs, let him continue.
5) Mix in a QB draw. Move the pocket. Get some rollout misdirection going I the pass game. Help out our OL in pass pro, they need it.
6) Bring back the under center jet sweep, and the under center quick hitch RPO to the WRs. Those were deadly in 2015 and I have no idea why we've completely eliminated those plays.
7) Bring back the Fullback trap with Mason/Hill. This is another deadly play from 2015 and early 2016 that has gone MIA. It slows down the DTs penetration.
8) Bring back the bubble screen and fake bubble screen to TE middle screen. See previous posts regarding great plays from 2015 that disappeared.
None of this is difficult to implement or overly risky, and at this point, you've got to try something new. You can't beat competent defenses with a pass game built on fades and drag routes. There has to be more variety.
