So instead of commitment or maybe even promise (implies you will do something)...how about declaration. Such and such kid has 'declared' for UM. It implies you will do something but doesn't necessarily imply a definitive future act. It implies you have declared you will do something but gives a little wiggle room to back out.
Declaration? Let's come up with a better word to describe recruiting verbals before NLI signing day. Verbal would probably do it too.
