Now this is funny. Is there any other University in America that

allows one sport in their athletic department to have their own nickname.

Long Beach State mens baseball....Dirtbags.

I guess the University doesn't want to embrace the nickname for obvious reasons. I am surprised the feminists haven't protested this name. :)

Isn't this nickname as offensive as any other nickname that is protested by media elites? I don't have a problem with it...funny as hell.

in Orofino Idaho the high school is next to the mentally insane

facility and the team's nickname is the Maniacs.

UNLV Basketball --- the Running Rebels

every other UNLV sports team is just the Rebels.

Also: I know Murray State baseball is the Thoroughbreds, whereas every other team is the Racers. There are a number of Universities where the women's basketball team is the Lady (Tennessee and Penn State among them), though every other women's team doesn't have the "Lady" in front.

I think Long Beach State absolutely does embrace the Dirtbags moniker. It's unique, and as such it's sort of become a "marketing element" for them, and of course baseball is by far the sport which Long Beach State is most known for/most successful at. I like it.

Good stuff. Maybe the Universities can keep a more formal nickname but

then certain athletic teams could come up with some crazy stuff like they do in horse racing.
