Not signing Suh was the right move for that money

Suh has been unquestionably one of the best defensive players in the league the past 5 years. The splits with him on vs off the field are unquestionable. The Lions were meaningfully better when he was on the field. Losing Suh is a major negative for the near-term prospects of this organization.

BUT - it's the best indication I've seen yet that Mayhew knows what he's doing. Signing that contract is what losing organizations do. The level of risk wouldn't be worth it. We've had 5 good years from him, but the price of the next 6 was simply too staggeringly high to justify. We aren't winning a Super Bowl with Stafford at QB anyway (just my opinion), but there are a number of serviceable (even upper tier), less expensive options out there at DT. Hello Haloti Ngata? Hello Vince Wilfork? And take his excess money and use it elsewhere. Lord knows we have some holes. This played out the right way.
