For those that happen to follow, there I won't be able to work on any OL grades this week. I'm out of state at a conference all week so I won't have a chance to review the film. I'll try to do both games next weekend. A couple rough observations though:
- At first glance I thought our OL blocked their asses off yesterday. I thought we ran the ball well and on the occasions where we didn't, the RB's missed some lanes, one Ty Isaac run on a 3rd & 1 immediately comes to mind where he lost two yards while a huge cutback lane was there too his right.
- Passing game is just out of sync. I don't think it's all on Speight either. It's really hard to break down without the all-22 film in the passing game because you need to be able to see the route combinations and the rotations of the S's. Could be that the timing is just off i.e. WR's aren't to the spot yet when Speight's ready to throw, or it could be that Speight's not seeing the field. Probably a combination of both actually but that can be fixed with time.
- Sequencing on offense mystifies me a little. Seems like we'll be finding a rhythm running the ball and then we'll throw 3 straight passes (...and then punt).
- One thing that I didn't like yesterday were the tight bunched formations. It seemed like that that brought all the defenders in between the numbers and in obvious passing situations it gave AF a million possibilities to blitz from. With a really young right side of the OL I thought we lost more than we gained in those sets.
- One thing that worries with me guys like Pep Hamilton coming from the NFL is that maybe his scheme is too complex to fit into a college practice schedule. Sometimes less is more.
- I know that people are pissed and everything but I really don't think things are as bad as they looked. Once the kinks get worked out in the passing game we'll start converting in the red zone, and that's really the only thing keeping us from very comfortable wins the last two weeks. We fix that and we'll be fine. That's not a very long to-do list.
