This class was always going to be small, then throw in a new coaching staff and 3 weeks to recruit. Our star average was top 20, but Rivals rankings are based on points of your top 20 commits, and we only had 14 commits, the least of any power 5 school. So, sure, by a points basis Vandy had a better class, but our star average is much higher.

Yes, the relatively low rank is due exclusively to the size of the class: 14 vs. 20 or 25 for most programs. The number of 4 star recruits (six of them) is competitive with other Big Ten programs except OSU (MSU had seven 4-stars).
On top of which: recruiting rankings are over-rated. Michigan has had several to 20 classes in the past several years, and we know what happened on the field.
