So we have the other thread going about Alabama and paying players. Anyone that doesn’t accept that the playing field is indeed tilted, heavily, isn’t paying attention.
But I will ask, does anyone truly believe that players being paid in some fashion will level the field? I continue to see folks suggest NIL or things that fashion will solve the problems. I disagree, and here’s why:
- The football factories that cheat today will cheat tomorrow. To think they will just accept being knocked down to normal is ridiculous. There is a reason they cheat today, and that same reason exists tomorrow. They will just step up their game.
- Even with payment, Michigan in particular still will have the regional disadvantage. The midwest is no longer filled with a bunch of homegrown studs and a lot of the west coast and southern kids still choose to stay local, or at least more local as far as weather goes.
- School. Nothing as far as admittance (for transfers) nor the requirement once you are at Michigan to do well in school changes. Zero.
This rule change may allow us to grab a very small handful of kids we lose, but the haves and the have nots will still be largely the same.
And yes, I get that Michigan is a huge name. But our fans are not as committed to the football program when in comparison to the Bama’s of the world. So we may fare better than other schools with this, but the gap between us and Bama will still largely remain the same.
Convince me otherwise!
