First, I'll be gracious... Pat Fitzgerald is a hell of a guy, a hell of a coach, and a guy I'd trust my son to. He's also a damn fine football coach, and got as much juice from that squeeze as any man or coach could. Kudos to he and the NW kids on one hell of an effort.
Now, to be less than gracious... F the B1G!!! We beat NW tonight along with the refs and the league. It started with a blatant hold on Ambry during NW's first punt return, and ended with a blatant hold on Winovich on a play that would give them a chance to get it to the end zone. If Warde wants to make an enormous fan, he can ask for a review session with the conference head of officials. I'd love to hear an explanation for at least a half dozen calls or no calls that threatened to impact the outcome. I laughed my ass off when the TV crew pointed out the lack of laundry on the field after Gentry's big catch. It's truly an ocassion when we make a play that isn't called back. Ha, in your face!
All this aside, I couldn't be more proud of our kids. They settled in and invested in the body shots. They supported each other and made plays. It's not the dominating win we were dreaming of, but it could be the best thing to happen to this group so far. It's a game we'd have surely lost last season, a win with plenty of teachable moments, and a return to planet earth for a group that was getting a whole lot of love this past week. I'm proud of their effort, and believe this is a group wants to be really good.
Go Blue and God bless.
