Offense:
The playcalling to start Today’s game was really discouraging. If ever there was a game to take a little more risk, it was today. I think that’s why folks get so frustrated. Against a good team, we may find ourselves down 14 really quick with that type of gameplan.
With that said, I do also believe we are seeing progress. Shea is legit. WR starting to make plays. Some very nice play calls, in particular the fake reverse to Ambry. Hopefully as we see success, the coaches become more confident making these play calls more frequently.
Frustrated that we didn’t see more Hudson and Mayfield, early. If they are going to be options late this year, they need first team reps.
We lack explosiveness at the RB position. Tru has the best vision of any of our backs, unfortunately he has no speed to go with it. Still like his contributions very much, and I might argue we see fewer negative plays if he is primary ball carrier.
Defense:
Something is missing. I was very concerned about losing Hurst. That is proving to be a problem. If Solomon comes back great, but seems like we are not good on the interior. This will present huge problems against our tougher comp, as some will power run up the gut and we will continue to be hurt by mobile QB’s.
More importantly, like many have said, our safeties are now being abused in coverage. We just made an SMU receiver look like an all pro today. This is a pattern and we arent adjusting. Others have said, why don’t we ever play nickel or dime? Maybe we don’t have sufficient corners. Not sure but man, we are getting killed.
The penalties are another huge area of concern. Yes, some have been questionable, but this team lacks discipline. Our corners are nowhere near as good as they have been made out to be. Hudson has been a no show this year, and teams have figured out DB’s scheme. Will he adjust?
Right now, I am more concerned about the D. We need the offense to get opened up, as I have a feeling the only way we beat PSU and OSU is in shootouts. Wiscy and MSU will be the usual tough slower games, but those other two can score in bunches.
