1. On the whole, it was a strong effort. We played with energy and enthusiasm, and guys made plays. There was a lot to like.
2. It's still WMU, so while things went well, I don't know if I can take a lot from that game.
3. I'm not convinced our OL, at the point of attack, is going to be good enough where we can chew up the clock, and have long, 10-15 play drives. Corum looked awesome when he got running lanes, and Haskins is just a tough guy with great balance, but there were a lot of running plays that went nowhere. Against the better defenses, at least from what I saw today, we'll need to throw the ball to open up the running game, and not vice versa.
4. I was really pleased to see Eric All catch the ball cleanly today. He could be a nice weapon.
5. The blocking on those two end arounds was fantastic. Hopefully we work those plays in on a weekly basis. Henning and Wilson can fly.
6. As we get deeper into the year, and assuming Bell is going to miss 4-5 games at the very least (if not the whole year), I think Johnson and Baldwin are going to become very important receivers. I'd like to see us attack over the top more with those guys.
7. I was very encouraged by the defensive effort. First, their QB was really good. So to hold them to 7 against the first team defense is a strong outing. The scheme made sense - lots of guys were in position to make plays, we didn't give up any huge plays, defensive backs were turned and ready to play the ball, and we got some pressure on the QB. There was a sequence in the first half where they ran it up the middle about four straight times and probably gained close to 40 yards. We have to clean that up. But on the whole, I liked what I saw.
8. JJ is raw, much like Drew Henson as a freshman, but man can he sling the ball. That TD to Baldwin was pretty awesome. I imagine unless Cade struggles, the job will be his this year and I anticipate he'll play well. But next fall, we might have Brady/Henson part 2 on our hands.
9. On Cade, we didn't ask him to do a lot, but he played well. His only two incompletions were the batted balls. And the deep ball to Ronnie Bell was a beautiful throw.
10. Stating the obvious here, but man I really hope Ronnie Bell is OK. Tough, tough break for him and for the team.
Loved the picture of Juwan and all the former players together getting ready to watch the game.
