Here is a breakdown on the importance of hauling in class that is RETAINED and developed over a four year span. Also- Look at the OSU classes in comparison. No matter what is said-RR sucked at Michigan and should have been fired. Look at his retention rates and Hoke had to deal with that for a couple years as well. We all know where Brady failed but he did a good job recruiting and Harbaugh was able to scrap together a team this year without a true QB and go 9-3. Also, look at OSU under Myer-They are not going anywhere folks. Harbaugh this year is just getting started for UM. Tressel flat out out coached Carr, RR and Hoke in his last stretch.

Carr- Class Rankings Signed Stayed in school 4 years OSU Rank
2002 #16 22 17 #2- Tressel
2003 #17 23 18 #41-Tressel
2004 # 4 22 19 #16 -Tressel
2005 #6 23 20 #12 Tressel
2006 #13 19 16 #12-Tressel
2007 #12 20 14 # 15-Tressel
RR 2008 #10 24 9 #25-Tressel
2009 #8 22 11 #3-Tressel 2010 #20 27 7 #25-Tressel
Hoke 2011 #21 20 10 #11-Fickell
2012 #7 25 20 #4 Meyer
2013 #5 27 22 #2-Meyer
2014 #31 16 14 #3-Meyer
JH 2015 #50 14 14 #9-Meyer

Sorry about how this turned out. I had it in the correct format and this website screwed it up. Try to read the best you can. Bottom line is that the RR years had a lasting effect on the program and Brady (who clearly had many faults) did he bets he probably could have to patch it up quickly.

Good post. In summary:

- RR recruited decently (not great), but as you point out, the retention was horrible.
- Hoke recruited well (particularly 2012 and 2013) and didn't have retention issues. Those classes make up the bulk of UM's contributors this year and next.
- The 2014 and 2015 classes were very small (avg. star rating wasn't that bad); Rivals Team rankings depend a lot on class size.
- JH's 2016 and 2017 classes will be large and highly ranked (top 5 or better)

I was shocked at how many players recruited and signed by Rich Rod either quit school or did not even make it to Ann Arbor with his two real recruiting classes. This is probably what contributed to his being fired. I guess he never paid attention to the academic standards at UM when he recruited. Same mentality he has at WVU. Hoke also had to deal with that for at least two years. His 11-2 his first year would have never occurred under RR with Greg Robinson running the defense. I hope all those UM fans who loved RR and screamed that he was not given enough time were taught by Harbaugh this year what REAL football coaching and program building should look like. Also, Dick Rod's Arizona teams score 55 but give up 75. He is a offensive coach only (coordinator really) and NOT a head coach. Thank God we are through those dark years with him and Brady's coaching failures as well. Harbaugh brought UM back this year and has not really got started yet. The 2016 recruiting class is proof of this.

Did RR recruit that well? I don't know. Maybe in spots.

Did Hoke recruit that well? Maybe in certain spots and much better than RR but I don't think he did so well at the qb position and other places. How about this. Hoke recruited well very according to rivals but in actuality and REALITY...not nearly as well as Dantonio.

Some of it was about development but people really need to learn this lesson...stop focusing on what Rivals or any other site tells you. Watch the film and trust the coaches. Recruiting rankings and stars are way overrated.

You guys forget a couple things - more RR recruits in the Pros then Hoke's. Omameh, Kovacs, Robinson, Lewan, Fitz, etc are all in the Pros right now and I think there are a few others...only Funchess if I am not mistaken for Hoke. Schoefield was a RR recruit as well no?

Remember that year Rich Rocket Scientist recruited ONE O lineman? He also hated recruiting D line, so I can't imagine why he wasn't successful.
It doesn't get fixed overnight...

Are these RR recruits starters or players on relatively poor teams?

Hokes guys are coming but haven't declared. Guys like Butt and probably Peppers and Lewis, etc.
