After some consideration, the Wolverines are among the top schools for Mount Juliet (Tenn.) High rising junior and three-star linebacker Ethan Crisp. The others in contention are Cincinnati, Kentucky, Missouri, Vanderbilt, and Virginia Tech. Crisp is the No. 20 ranked outside linebacker in the country and No. 16 in the state of Tennessee, according to Rivals.com.
"Big Ten is one of the best conferences in the nation so for (Michigan) to win the Big Ten Championship was very impressive," Crisp said. "Michigan has been playing really good defense and good ball. They're a team on the rise and a team that's been playing hot."
Michigan would offer Crisp over the summer and after frequent talks with defensive backs coach Steve Clinkscale, the 6-foot-3, 210-pounder is ready to give the Wolverines a closer look heading into February. Crisp has the ability to play multiple roles on defense, including outside linebacker, safety, or at a hybrid role.
"I feel like linebacker is one of the most important positions on the field," Crisp said. "They're the glue that holds a defense together. You have to have really good players at that position."
Crisp and I talked following his announcement and he had great things to say about Clinkscale, who is his primary recruiter for and has strong ties to the Nashville area. The two are in contact with each other frequently and Crisp appreciates the attention received from Clinkscale.
"Coach Clink offered me right when he got up to Michigan," Crisp said. "He's a really good guy. He keeps in touch almost on a daily basis and checks up on me. He's just a really good guy and I enjoy talking to him."
Crisp also has a connection with Michigan linebacker Junior Colson. The two have trained together at National Playmakers Academy which is based in Nashville and also runs its own 7v7 program.
"(Colson) is a really cool guy and really talented guy," Crisp said. "I think it would be really to play with him (at Michigan)."
While he has yet to visit Michigan's campus, Crisp did catch a glimpse of the Detroit back in late-December when he participated in the SoundMind SoundBody Showcase at Ford Field. It was there that Crisp got the opportunity to know and compete against several high school prospects linked to the Wolverines, including 2023 wide receiver commit Semaj Morgan and 2024 defensive Jacob Oden.
In terms of upcoming plans, Crisp is heading down to Miami with National Playmakers Academy for the Battle 7v7 Tournament this weekend. He'll also be participating in the tournament when it heads to Las Vegas on February 19.
Crisp plans on taking his first visit sometime in the spring. He wants to check out a spring practice and see how the Wolverines run operations.
