Kevin Conry -- defensive coordinator and associate head coach of the University of Maryland -- was just named Michigan's head lacrosse coach, the second in program history.

In his five seasons at Maryland, he helped lead the Terps to four NCAA Final Fours, one national title (this year) and, oh yeah, five straight Big Ten titles. Best defense in the country this year.

Strong past ties to all of the hotbed areas for recruits; he grew up on Long Island, played at Johns Hopkins, has coached at Siena, Penn State, Fairfield and now Maryland and is considered one of the top young defensive minds in the game. For much of the search, he was considered the front-runner and top candidate.

John Paul, the former club coach who helped lead the effort to go varsity and who became the program's first coach, was not retained (which was announced the first week of May). Michigan finished the 2017 season with an 8-6 overall record, its best result in six seasons as a varsity team, including its first-ever win over a Top 10 team (Penn). The program was 0-5 in Big Ten Conference play; Maryland and Ohio State played for the national championship game on Memorial Day in Boston.
