Prediction:
A lot of nervous birds over this one. I don't see it. You guys almost got me but researching this game just solidified my confidence. Stop the run, win the game. Maryland is a very run heavy offense that helps them occasionally take the top off the defense. That sounds mildly concerning but our corners should be fine and our safeties seemed to have improved from the Notre Dame game, plus Hill is not Wimbush.
While Maryland's rushing offense is impressive on paper, it becomes less impressive when they only averaged 3.1 per carry against Texas and 4.3 vs Temple. Texas is ranked 29th in run defense and Temple 95th while Michigan is 7th. 444 of their rushing yards (43% of their season total) came against Bowling Green who is allowing 341yds per game on the ground, dead last in FBS. Eastern Kentucky ran for 389yds and Miami (OH) 289yds against BGSU for reference. Our defense has almost always held running backs well below their averages.
Therefor on the offensive side of the ball Maryland is going to be rather one dimensional, at least in terms of what should bring them success and I don't see much success in that dimension today. It should also be noted they had 0 offensive pts against Temple.. Both scores were returns (INT and blocked punt). They've averaged 17 passes per game over their last 3 and even against Texas when they threw 34 attempts, they ran 46 times despite limited success. They also can't convert a 3rd down.
As for their defense they haven't been overly impressive. 35 points allowed to Temple is Temple's season high despite playing FCS Villanova, Buffalo and Tulsa. Texas' 29pts is the only game Texas scored more than 2 TDs besides Tulsa (28pts). Bowling Green and Minnesota are the only teams they've held below their average but I don't think anyone is thinking BGSU or Minnesota are good teams, are we?
This "big play" offense had 2 offensive TDs of over 25yds against Texas (28yd run and 65yd pass). Both those plays were 11 minutes into the game. Since then they had a 36yd run with 3 minutes left against Bowling Green, didn't even get into field goal range on offense against Temple and then had 4 25+ yd touchdowns against Minnesota. They are a big play offense against Minnesota. That seems to be about it.
Maryland has been average over the course of their last 3 games. They had a great season opening game against Texas at home, filled with not only the emotions of the season/home opener and big opponent but also with the tribute to Jordan McNair. They aren't going to do it in the Big House.
