"Meaningless"...

It seems as though it's the new word of the day WRT non-playoff bowl games, but is it really new at all? Not really. The only difference is that now we're guaranteed one more game for the title, where as before it was one game and before that we knew only a very few teams were considered for the vote. By today's logic, most bowl games are and have always been meaningless. So let me ask...

Was the performance Brady and Terrell put up in the 2000 OB meaningless? Or how about great games by RB's Ty Wheatley and Leroy Hoard in the 1989 and 1993 Rose Bowl games? Meaningless? What about the goal line stand early in the 1981 Classic that set the tone for a huge win over Washington?

All are meaningless by a standard of national championship or bust. None of those teams were in the running to be national champions, so why were these "meaningless" games so meaningful? These are games of legend that have long been remembered by legions of Michigan fans.

So is it possible we, in the spirit of so many games we hold dear, denounce the "meaningless" tag? Who knows, maybe we can save whatever is left of college football.
