...but it seems my perspective on UM sports has changed over the last year.
I'm a pretty rabid fan....been so for 40+ years since my early teens. Grad school cemented it. I generally prefer to watch football and basketball games by myself although I'm sure family members anywhere in the house can hear what I'm yelling about! And I learned a long time ago if I'm going to throw something, an accent pillow is a good choice.
A UM loss could ruin a weekend or a day. It's not like my personal identity was tied up in the success of our teams, but I was definitely deeply emotionally invested.
However, it doesn't quite feel that way anymore. I certainly still care. And want our boys to be successful and represent the university well. But I've noticed I can just enjoy the highs - blowing out good teams, seeing great performances, etc - without the lows being as low. I'm disappointed our trip to the big dance MAY be impacted by injuries. But I won't be devastated.
This change isn't age maturation (think I'm beyond that). Maybe the last year, with all it's turmoil, uncertainty, and adversity, has just changed the emotional investment. Enjoy the highs, but don't let the lows get to me as there are far more important things going on in life. Just appreciate things more....
Has anyone else had this kind of big change? Any reason other than a COVID by-product?
